Solon Housing Association tenants across Bristol celebrate new bike sheds

The bike sheds are part of a pilot project by Travelwest in partnership with Sustrans which has made 50% match funding available to Registered Social Landlords as an incentive to improve or install bike parking for tenants.

United Communities, Knightstone Housing, and Bristol City Council Housing are also taking advantage of the match funding, with further bike parking due to be installed in early 2016.

Solon opted for sheds built by The Peddler and the Roof, a local social enterprise, as their designs are in keeping with Solon’s housing stock and a practical solution for properties with front gardens. The sheds are built from a mixture of recycled timber, and sustainably sourced local larch which is naturally weather resistant and will last 10 – 12 years without treatment, or longer with oiling. The sheds also feature green roofs to increase biodiversity, clean the air and reduce storm-water run off which in turn reduces the risk of flooding.

Below are quotes from some of those involved

Gayle, Solon tenant, Barton Hill “I had started to spot the odd bike shed in small front gardens recently and I loved the concept of quick access and beautiful green roofs, so I was delighted to read in our quarterly news magazine that Solon were working in partnership with Travelwest to fund bike sheds. I was very interested so I got in touch with Amanda.

After a few phone calls and meeting to discuss the location of the shed, Andre and Albert arrived to start work.

The bike shed is brilliant, there’s enough space for up to three bikes, it’s very secure and having such easy access to our bikes will encourage my daughter (7), son (14) and me to cycle more often. Thank you Solon, Travelwest and Peddler and the Roof.”

Kylie Davis, Estate Management Officer, Solon

We know that bike storage is an issue in the inner city, so we wanted to take advantage of the match funding available to us through the Travelwest programme to provide extra space for our tenants. The process has been really easy – Amanda has been super-efficient and organised, as have Peddler and the Roof. Our tenants have been delighted with the bike sheds – they are a great design and look fab“

Toni, Solon tenant, Barton Hill

My kids will be using their bikes loads more now that they don’t have to bring them through the house”

Peddler and the Roof

“Working with Travel West and Solon has been a great opportunity to make cycling easier and more accessible for many families. So far everyone has loved their sheds.”
