Work continues to improve the public space. New cycling and pedestrian areas are being created and the area outside Electricity House is being pedestrianised.

New pedestrian and cycling crossings have been installed connecting Baldwin Street and the centre and new signage has been erected to guide pedestrians around the city centre until all the new pedestrian crossings are installed.

Planting is due to start soon.

Avon Crescent

Traffic can no longer enter Avon Crescent from Cumberland Road This makes Avon Crescent a less attractive route for Heavy Goods Vehicles thereby reducing traffic and making it a safer environment for residents, pedestrians and cyclists.

Cumberland Road

Work begins this month to install a new MetroBus stop close to Vauxhall Bridge. This will include a toucan crossing and a new pedestrian and cyclist entrance to the Chocolate Path.

Also this month a new bus lane and bus gate will be installed on Cumberland Road near to the junction with Mardyke Ferry Road; and a new MetroBus stop will be constructed at Wapping Wharf near Gaol Ferry Bridge/Gaol Ferry Steps.

Bathurst Basin Bridge

Our contractors are building a new bridge alongside the existing bridge which takes Commercial Road over the Bathurst Basin. We’re also linking two existing cycling and walking paths and improving the pedestrian crossings in this area.

East Street, Bedminster

Work will begin in August to install a new MetroBus stop outside Wilko. East Street will be closed to vehicles on the 1st & 2nd for preparatory work and for six weeks from 16th. Existing bus services will be diverted via Malago Road and will stop at Dalby Avenue.

Bedminster Parade

Work to install new MetroBus stops on Bedminster Parade near to Asda have started and are expected to take another 14 weeks.

Hartcliffe Way

Temporary two-way traffic lights have been installed at the junction of Novers Lane and Hartcliffe Way to enable Wales and West Utilities to divert a large gas main and for the construction of a large retaining wall to support the south bank. The work requires specialist contractors to move the gas main and therefore the work is taking longer than originally anticipated. The temporary lights are expected to remain in place until the 12th August.

Work on the new Hartcliffe Way bus lane is progressing well and is expected to be completed in the autumn.

Hengrove Park, Bamfield and Whitchurch Lane

Work is underway in Hengrove Park which will see a one-way circulatory system introduced to improve traffic flows. The bus stop outside the hospital will be upgraded to become a MetroBus stop.

Improvement works to the junction of Whitchurch Lane and Bamfield will begin shortly, and be followed by upgrade work to the pairs of bus stops on Bamfield.

In Whitchurch Lane, underground cables will be installed to serve bus shelters and the new information points that will be installed at every MetroBus stop.
