Planning submission is step towards regeneration of Bedminster Green, Bristol

Submission of planning for new, modern, and sustainable car park just one minute’s walk from Bedminster’s East Street retail area.

The regeneration of Bedminster Green has taken another step forward with the submission of planning by Bristol City Council and development partner Dandara for a new, modern, and sustainable car park just one minute’s walk from Bedminster’s East Street retail area.

Bristol City Council is working on a number of strategic projects as part of its plans to regenerate and improve the area. This includes the opening up of the River Malago and improvements to the Green; upgrading and improving travel around and through the area with better routes for public transport, walking and cycling; and changes to parking in the area.

Following public engagement events earlier this year, the submission of the application for the new decked car park on the site of the Little Paradise car park, including the necessary landscaping and highways improvements, kick starts the vision for Bedminster Green.

The parking improvements will see the Little Paradise North and Hereford Street car parks closed and consolidated into a purpose-built three storey car park at the existing Little Paradise car park site.1

If permission is granted, the car park would be ready in early 2022. Both Hereford Street and Little Paradise North car parks are expected to stay open until the new Little Paradise car park is complete.

The consolidation of parking is hoped to have a number of benefits, including reducing  local traffic and unnecessary journeys. Currently car park users drive around trying to find spaces at Little Paradise before being forced to drive further from the shops to the Hereford Street car park.  High quality landscaping, lighting and CCTV is proposed to make the area safer and more attractive for car park users, residents and shoppers.

The changes to parking provision will have the additional benefit of releasing land to build a block of 21 affordable homes on the site of the existing Little Paradise North carpark. Little Paradise North will be bought from the Council by its development partner Dandara, which is proposing to build the affordable homes as part of its wider plans for 316 new homes on Little Paradise.2

As part of the council’s commitment to increasing green travel provision in the city, the short stay pay-and-display car park would include 16 electric vehicle charging points (a ratio of one charging point to every five parking spaces) and six electric car club spaces, while retaining the area’s 18 blue badge spaces.

We have big ambitions for regenerating Bedminster and this planning application is an early step towards transforming the area.  By changing the existing car parks, we can focus on improving provision for blue badge holders and electric vehicles, alongside proposed improvements in cycling and walking infrastructure, promoting sustainability and accessibility in Bedminster while strengthening links with the East Street retail area.

This is great news for East Street. It will make it much easier, safer, and more pleasant for people to access the shops, cafes, and bars on East Street. Investing in East Street sends a very positive message to retailers and their many hundreds of employees. BID Bedminster welcomes the proposals and, as much as we all want to reduce car usage, we cannot ignore the needs of residents with mobility issues. And the emphasis on electric vehicle charging and electric car club spaces is to be particularly welcomed, as East Street starts to turn the tide on decades of decline.
