Consultation on proposals for Ashton Vale Road alternative access

In February 2016 we consulted on six highway options for alternative road access to the Ashton Vale Industrial Estate as part of the MetroWest Phase 1 project.

Following on from that work, we selected two of the options for further consideration, along with an additional new option. Consultation on these options was carried out in November and December 2016.

The consultation closed on 12th December. Consultation responses will be used to inform the decision on which options will be taken forward for further development. Following this, we will undertake formal public consultation on the whole MetroWest Phase 1 project in spring 2017.

Background information

The February 2016 consultation was the result of emerging work for our Transport Assessment. This indicated that the MetroWest Phase 1 half-hourly train service would result in longer traffic queues at the level crossing on both Ashton Vale Road (exiting the industrial estate) and Winterstoke Road (entering the industrial estate).

As a result the level crossing barriers would need to operate significantly more often than they do now. Our initial operational planning work indicates a total barrier-down time of approximately 20 minutes each hour, with the level crossing barrier being down for between 3 and 12 minutes per cycle.

The report from the February consultation can be viewed below. The report from the recent consultation will be published in 2017.
