The planned resurfacing of a section of the A38 near Bristol Airport this weekend (7 and 8 July) has been postponed due to the extreme weather conditions.Surface dressing was due to be carried out on a six-kilometre stretch of the A38 between the South Bristol Link Road and the junction with Downside Road.

However, after monitoring the weather forecast closely over the last few days with its contractors and with the heatwave set to continue, North Somerset Council has taken the decision to cancel the works this weekend.

“The road surface temperatures will simply be too high to carry out this type of work,” said Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, the council’s executive member for highways. “It presents a number of risks including chipping loss, excessive dust and bitumen bleeding into the road surface

“Should this happen, there is a much-increased risk of damage to vehicles and the surrounding environment, as well as significant damage to the newly installed road surface.”

The council will continue to monitor the weather with a view to completing the works over the weekend of 14 and 15 July. A final decision on whether to go ahead will be made next week.
