Twenty new cycle hangars have been installed in the city and are now available to hire.

This latest phase sees 20 new hangars installed in Bath, further supporting the council’s commitment to promoting active travel and sustainable transport. This is in addition to the existing 21 hangars across Bath & North East Somerset.

Each hangar provides secure, weather-protected storage for up to six bicycles and occupies just half the space of a standard car parking bay. Spaces will be available to rent from 10 June 2025, for a fee of £60 per year.

A secure space to store cycles encourages more people to consider using a bicycle and enables more travel choices as well as helping improve health and wellbeing. 

Since the hangars were introduced in 2023, the occupancy rate has grown to 94% in April 2025. In Bath alone, the hangars have been at capacity for almost one year.

Councillor Lucy Hodge, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Transport Delivery, said: “We’re delighted to be expanding our cycle hangar programme. Secure cycle parking is a key part of enabling more people to choose cycling for everyday journeys. 

“The current hangars are at capacity, with many requests on our waiting lists. These new hangars will make it easier for residents to store bikes safely and conveniently, especially where home storage is limited.”

The cycle hangars are funded through the Government’s Active Travel Fund and delivered in partnership with the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.

Helen Godwin, the new Mayor of the West of England, said: “Across our region, we are investing in more than 80 new cycle hangars – including here in Bath & North East Somerset.

“I am sure they will be extremely popular with people looking to store their bikes safely, but who might not have space to do so at home.

“We will be working with local councils to secure further funding to add more cycle hangars in the future to encourage active and sustainable travel in the West of England.”
