A new bid for government funding for rail and road improvements in North Somerset has been launched by North Somerset Council.

Working with Gloucestershire County Council and Wiltshire Council, North Somerset has submitted an ‘expression of interest’ to the Department of Transport’s Transforming Cities Fund.

The fund aims to improve intra-city transport provision with a particular emphasis on improving public transport.

It is one of a number of options being explored to secure the remaining funding to deliver the MetroWest Phase 1 project, including the re-opening of the Portishead rail line for passenger train services. North Somerset’s proposals also include improvements to the A38/A370 Weston-super-Mare to Bristol corridors.

“We will continue to look at every grant opportunity and to lobby the government for sufficient funding to take forward much needed rail and highway infrastructure to meet planned economic and residential growth across North Somerset,” said North Somerset Council’s deputy leader Cllr Elfan Ap Rees.

The council is now awaiting the outcome of its expression of interest. Successful bidders will be asked to develop their initial proposals into more detailed proposals through a business case stage.
