Travel hub camera surveys: information for the public
What is happening?
As part of our travel hub project, we want to understand how people are using these spaces and facilities compared to before their completion. We will be using CCTV cameras for seven days, so that we can count the number of people using facilities at the travel hubs and compare it to similar information from 2023.
How does this impact me?
Anyone in an area covered by a camera will be informed that CCTV is in operation by on-site notices.
Recorded footage will be analysed by a specialist contractor, Nationwide Data Collection, who have been employed to undertake pedestrian and vehicle mode counts, as well as determine how people commonly travel through the location (desire lines). We can also then see if people use one or more of the facilities available at the hub. Because the recordings are high resolution, people can potentially be recognised, and car number plates identified. This is a by-product of the video recording; no active processing such as facial recognition technology or DVLA searches will be used.
What will happen to the recordings?
The footage will be used for analysis as described above, then deleted within three months of the recording date. All recordings while held will be subject to GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) and the Data Protection Act 2018.
You can read more about data protection legislation here.
I think I’ve been recorded, who can I speak to?
If you have any concerns or questions about the recording, please call Nationwide Data Collection on 01926 485504.
