Operational information

For more than 40 years, Wrington Patient Helpline has provided transport to medical appointments, and hospital or care home visits, for people living in the Wrington parish who have no other practical means of getting there. We focus on those who do not have their own transport or support from friends or family to reach appointments or visits — we are not a taxi service.

We are available to anyone who lives in Wrington (including Redhill), Butcombe and Burrington parishes, and we operate mainly on weekdays, plus weekends on request.

We have six co-ordinators who take it in turns to take calls on our dedicated phone line. The co-ordinator will then aim to find a driver from our list of volunteers.

Please give us a minimum of 2 days’ notice, but preferably as long as possible. Many of our volunteers are busy people, so it can take a day or two to find someone who is available.

Membership and fees

No membership requirement.

Although we don’t charge a set fee for this service, our drivers receive 55p per mile for each trip to help cover fuel and other car expenses, so we ask for a donation of at least that amount for each trip.

We also ask our clients to pay any parking fees incurred (not parking fines!). All donations are gratefully received, and we are immensely grateful to those who remember us in their wills.

Booking trips

To book, phone us on 07783 046 437. If there is no reply, please leave a message with your telephone number, and details of the appointment date, time, duration and location, and any accessibility needs, and we’ll get back to you asap.

• Please give us as much notice as possible.
• Please let us know of any accessibility needs in advance.
• If possible, please provide a mobile phone number and carry it with you. We will give you the mobile number of your driver. This means that if there are any problems during the visit, you can communicate with each other.
• It is useful to know in advance if you have a Blue Badge, and to bring it with you as this means that we can park the minibus in designated Disabled spaces.
• We ask that you check in advance what donation we suggest and put it in an in an envelope clearly addressed ‘Wrington Patient Helpline and marked with your name and address. You can either drop this into the Post Office at your convenience or if you have mobility issues, please give the envelope to your driver
• Please be ready at the agreed pick-up point and time.
