Manvers Street set for major improvement works
Major works to reconstruct a road in Bath city centre are set to start on 26 May.

The next phase of works to help improve the reliability of the number 1 bus service through Henbury, and make active travel safer, are due to begin on Passage Road on Monday 14 July 2025.
These essential works are needed to rebuild a section of the road because it was originally constructed with poor quality materials, including a base that is not strong enough and a top layer of tarmac that is too thin. To do so the southbound section of the dual carriageway will be closed one-way, between Crow Lane roundabout and Charlton Road between 14 July 2025 and 1 August 2025.
The number 1 bus service travelling towards the city centre will be diverted via Knole Lane and Charlton Road. Bus stops by Brentry Lane and The Ridgeway will be suspended. The closest bus stops are on Brentry roundabout eastbound or Falcondale Walk south westbound. The T7 service will also be diverted but this will not impact any bus stops.
The works are part of a two-year, £6 million project, which got underway in December 2024, that includes:
- Installing a segregated two-way cycleway on the eastern side of Passage Road
- Creating peak-hour bus lanes on both sides of the dual carriageway that will be in use from 7am to 10am and 4pm to 6.30pm
- Moving the pedestrian crossing by the roundabout closer to Knole Lane and Crow Lane
- Creating a pedestrian crossing to the north of Dragons Wells Road
- Narrowing the Brentry Lane and Passage Road junction
- Moving the central reservation, relocating a water main, and replacing the concrete road surface
I am pleased we have been able to programme in these essential repairs to extend the life of the road alongside the wider project to improve access for buses and active travel routes.

We need to plan ahead in preparation for more people moving to the area, thanks to the development of the former airfield in Filton, which will put pressure on our roads.
With much of our highways network already at capacity, improving bus routes, so that we can move people around efficiently, is vital, as is making walking, wheeling and cycling safer to encourage many more people to travel actively.
I’d like to thank everyone for bearing with us throughout these works, especially this latest phase which will mean closing Passage Road to people travelling southbound towards the city centre.
To continue with the project, we will need to close Passage Road northbound later in the summer and will promote this closure nearer the time.
While Passage Road is closed southbound, traffic will need to follow the signposted diversion via Crow Lane, Henbury Road (B4055), and Falcondale Road (A4018) for onwards travel.
Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained throughout the closure.
Vehicles will not be able to access Passage Road via Brentry Lane.
The A4018 Passage Road project is being funded by the UK government through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement secured by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.
