Today, the Department for Transport has written to North Somerset Council to reaffirm their backing for the A38 Major Road Network (MRN) scheme.

The A38 MRN is funded by the Department for Transport and delivered in partnership with Somerset Council. The scheme looks to better connect communities by improving options for getting around – including by both active and sustainable travel – whilst also addressing journey reliability times and road safety along the A38 corridor.

The project includes works at nine locations along the A38 running between Barrow Street junction at Barrow Tanks and the Edithmead Roundabout (M5 J22). 

In June, North Somerset Council announced that contractors Octavius would help to deliver the scheme. Today’s letter from the Department for Transport confirms their support as North Somerset works with Octavius to develop detailed designs ready for submission of a Full Business Case in the winter. 

Public engagement around the detailed design is expected to launch in the autumn. 

Councillor Mike Bell, Leader of North Somerset Council, said “The A38 is vital in connecting our communities with Bristol, Somerset and beyond, so it’s great to have the Department for Transport reiterate their commitment to our planned improvements.  

“This comes in the same week that they have increased funding for the Portishead to Bristol rail line, demonstrating a government that understands and values our plans for the future: making North Somerset a place that is better connected and offers even greater access to all the benefits and opportunities that our growing region has to offer.

“Not only will the A38 MRN improve capacity on our roads, making journeys smoother, safer and more reliable, the scheme also includes sustainable options for getting around such as the widening of walking and cycling paths and new crossings for the Strawberry Line.

“Creating capacity and offering choice when it comes to getting around is key, whether living, working or visiting North Somerset, so it’s crucial we prepare for the future with schemes like the A38 MRN and continuing building infrastructure to support transport and access to education, leisure and economic prosperity.”
