Malago Road re-opening to two-way traffic this week

This Friday 9 August, Malago Road and Dalby Avenue will re-open to two-way traffic. The area has been transformed to make it easier for residents to walk/wheel, cycle, and use public transport in South Bristol.

The development works include a new continuous inbound bus lane along Malago Road and Dalby Avenue, new and improved bus stops, upgraded and additional pedestrian and cycle crossings, new and improved cycle lanes, and resurfaced roads and pavements. Sustainable drainage is now in place to help rainwater runoff from the sewer systems and onto the planted areas. There are also plans for new street trees to planted between the updated wider pavements. These works are part of the council’s East Bedminster Regeneration projects and will contribute to the council’s long term aims to improve transport options across Bristol.

I’m delighted to announce the official re-opening of Malago Road to two-way traffic, along with a host of other improvements to the area. I know how much residents and local businesses have been anticipating this news, particularly when disruption to the works on York Road caused further delays, and I want to say thank you for your patience and understanding over the past few years.

These works have transformed the area for local communities and will enable more residents to travel sustainably. The new wider pavements and improved bus options will mean residents can incorporate active travel such as walking/wheeling or cycling into their day to day lives. We look forward to also adding new cycle lanes soon. Along with road improvements, we will be planting 33 new trees in this area, with another 33 trees already planted across south Bristol. I hope that residents enjoy utilising the newly opened roads, and I look forward to listening to their feedback for future projects.

Councillor Ed Plowden, Chair of the Transport and Connectivity Policy Committee

Extensive work has been undertaken to realign Dalby Avenue and Malago Road, and improve Sheene Road junction while still allowing for the flow of one-way traffic. Bedminster Heat network pipes have also been installed, providing new developments in the area with low carbon energy.

Along with the Malago Road re-opening, from Friday 9 August Whitehouse Lane and Hereford Street will be one way only. The route will flow from Malago Road and Hereford Street towards Whitehouse Lane, with the one-way route ending at Philip Street. While the road is re-opening to two-way traffic early, construction work will continue and is due to complete on schedule at the end of August 2024.
