Work is coming to an end on Friday 12th September 2025 to allow more bus services to stop at Portway Park & Ride when travelling to and from the northwest of the city and beyond.

The project includes:

  • Widening and reconfiguring the bus junction
  • A new pedestrian crossing next to the bus junction
  • Resurfacing the area
  • Adding more wayfinding

Update to works at site

BCC and their delivery partner, Taylor Woodrow, have recently undertaken civil engineering works to make improvements to the bus junction at the Portway Park and Ride site. These works were completed in September 2025

The last part of the works is now to install the bifold entrance gates. These gates could not be installed as part of the main body of works based on the lead in time to design and fabricate these bespoke gates.

Works aim to start on Monday 19th January – and completely by Friday 30th January 2026. During this time, buses will need to once again use the temporary bus stops on the Portway, just outside the P&R site, bus passengers will be able to park in the P&R site and access the temporary stops using the pedestrian access steps / ramp within the site, and by means of a temporary signal controlled crossing near the junction with Barrow Hill Road.

The gates represent the final part of scope to be delivered and disruption caused as a result of this scheme at the P&R site.

How this will impact Park & Ride bus users

Temporary bus stops near the Park & Ride either side of the A4 Portway will need to be used by all passengers during the works.

Timings

The A4 Portway will remain open throughout but temporary traffic signals will be used to allow for two-way traffic. Thank you for bearing with us while we work to improve Portway Park & Ride.
