Helping to gain a better understanding of the walking and cycling experience for Bristol residents.

Alongside other Cycle Ambition Fund 2 projects, Bristol City Council is looking to address the bugbears encountered by people when travelling around the city. These are the bugbear issues that make cycling and walking less enjoyable for people. Issues like missing signs, restrictive barriers, etc., which make a journey more inconvenient.

Between Spring and Autumn 2016, we asked for your thoughts on what makes your experience less enjoyable and what our priorities should be in order to make a difference to your daily journeys. These comments were captured on our Bristol Bugbears website.

In October 2016, we closed the site for new comments after collecting nearly two thousand individual bugbears across Bristol.

Highlights of report

• 4,004 people engaged with the content of the Bugbears Commonplace website and 1,783 bugbear sites were pinpointed
• ‘Cycle Path’ and ‘Layout’ were the most selected issues at bugbear sites with each appearing in around 20% of cases, and these sites also attracted a high proportion of the agreements/likes from fellow contributors (half of all agreements)
• ‘Litter’, ‘Construction Disruption’, ‘Lighting’, ‘Environmental Nuisance’, ‘Vegetation’,’Cycle Parking’, ‘Barrier’, and ‘Road Sign’ were the least selected issues at bugbear sites with each appearing in less than 5% of cases.
• Almost half of the pinpointed bugbear sites are located within a 1.5 kilometre radius of the city centre.
