This summer, Network Rail is installing overhead line equipment inside the Patchway tunnels, and through Pilning to the Severn Tunnel. The work involves:

  • Installing conductor rails, lowering the track and improving drainage in one of the Patchway tunnels
  • Completing OLE installation in the other tunnel
  • Installing wires over masts and gantries between the Patchway tunnels and the Severn Tunnel
  • Carrying out maintenance work in the Severn Tunnel.

This three-week upgrade is a crucial milestone in our work to electrify the line between London Paddington and Cardiff Central, which will enable Great Western Railway to run Intercity Express Trains on electric from 2019; delivering more reliable, greener and quieter journeys.

Passengers should be aware that buses will replace trains throughout this period, with coaches running direct, between Bristol Parkway and Newport. Train services to south Wales from London will divert at Swindon, adding up to 40 minutes to the usual journey time. Check before you travel at www.nationalrail.co.uk

The work will be supported by existing Network Rail compounds next to Patchway and Pilning stations. Workers will park their cars at designated sites in Filton and travel to the site by minibus in order to keep congestion to a minimum.
