Disruption between Letchworth Garden City / Ely and Cambridge expected until 21:00

    Last updated: 06:17 25/06/2024

Multiple faults with the signalling system in the Cambridge area means some lines are disrupted. As a result, trains may have to run at reduced speeds between Letchworth Garden City / Ely and Cambridge. Trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 30 minutes or revised.

    This is expected until 21:00.

    Greater Anglia Customer Advice:

Due to congestion caused by a speed restriction being imposed following a signalling system fault reported in the Great Chesterford area, services between London Liverpool Street and Cambridge are experiencing delays of up to 30 minutes.

This may also lead to some services being cancelled or amended at short notice.

The line between Dullingham and Cambridge is blocked due to a problem at a level crossing in the area. This means that services will be severely disrupted until the problem is fixed. Network Rail engineers are expected to arrive on site at 22:00.

Greater Anglia are in the process of arranging rail replacement buses to help you complete your journey.

Please allow extra time for your journey.

Great Northern / Thameslink Customer Advice:

Thameslink and Great Northern services may be delayed by around 10-20 minutes in the Cambridge area due to a points failure.

Great Northern services may also be delayed by around 20 minutes at Ely due to further signalling problems on the northbound line towards Kings Lynn.

    Changes to Cambridge area services:

To reduce congestion, some trains from Brighton or London Kings Cross towards Cambridge may terminate at Letchworth Garden City, returning to Brighton or London Kings Cross from there.

This means that there will be a reduced service at stations between Letchworth Garden City and Cambridge.

We still expect you can use your normal route for your journey, but you may need to wait longer for a train, or change trains more often to get to your destination.

At Cambridge station, some trains may also depart from different platforms compared to those usually served. Please check your train carefully using the station information screens and by listening to announcements.

Can you tell me more about this?

Delays are being caused by a signalling issue which is blocking the lines through Platforms 7 & 8 at Cambridge Station. Trains are having to take it in turns to use other platforms, leading to congestion. Great Northern / Thameslink are now having to reduce the service in the area to avoid this building up.

Network Rail are working on this as quickly as possible. Due to the effects of today's hot weather on the points, this task is taking some time.

In addition, a further signalling issue has been reported to be causing delays to northbound trains departing Ely towards Kings Lynn.
