B3133 improvements begin in Congresbury
A major scheme to improve the condition and safety of roads in Congresbury begins on Monday 14 July.
As part of North Somerset Council’s commitment to improving the district’s roads, the council will be carrying out carriageway resurfacing works, the construction of traffic calming features and introducing a 20mph speed limit on the B3133 Brinsea Road and High Street, Congresbury.
To minimise disruption, the resurfacing and safety scheme are being completed at the same time under a road closure between 7pm and 5am. The closure will be from the junction of the A370 Station Road to the junction with Silver Street. Work will begin at the northern end of High Street, progressing southwards towards Brinsea Road.
The safety scheme aims to reduce traffic speeds from 30 to 20mph by using traffic calming measures including the construction of a raised flat top hump at the existing zebra crossing near Congresbury precinct and additional speed cushions along Brinsea Road.
20mph speed limit signage will be installed on the majority of the residential roads in Congresbury to reduce traffic speeds in the village. The introduction of the safety scheme follows consultation earlier this year.
Work is set to start on Monday 14 July 2025 for around eleven nights (excluding weekends). On the first night only (Monday 14 July), resurfacing will begin at the A370 Station Road junction. To manage traffic safely during this phase, two-way temporary traffic signals will be in operation at this junction for the duration of that night’s shift.
To ensure the work is carried out efficiently the road needs to be clear of all parked vehicles and yellow cones will be put in place ahead of the start of the scheme.
While carriageway resurfacing is in progress, on-street parking will not be available and vehicular access will be significantly impacted.
Traffic marshals will be present within the road closure area to assist and advise on access arrangements.
The above schedule is subject to change. For real-time updates and changes, follow North Somerset Travel and Roads on Facebook or visit www.n-somerset.gov.uk/roadworks.
The new 20mph limit will be the 31st introduced since 2000 with recent schemes including Yatton, Kenn, Hutton, Wrington, Uphill, Nailsea, Clevedon (The Beach / Hill Road area), Weston-super-Mare (Baker Street), Pill and Easton-in-Gordano.
This is a very busy road and there has been concern by the local community about the speed of traffic using this route.
Cllr Hannah Young, North Somerset Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for highways and sustainable travel
We are committed to encouraging sustainable travel and want to make this road a safer environment for all road users.
We are taking the opportunity to introduce a 20mph safety scheme while the road is being resurfaced to minimise disruption for residents and road users.
We appreciate that the series of utilities works within Congresbury have been difficult for residents and these will cause some further disruption, but this is a highly efficient use of the road closure and will avoid additional future inconvenience.
