North Somerset Council seeks views on improvements to the Golden Valley Bridleway in Nailsea
North Somerset Council is proposing plans to upgrade a well-used section of the Golden Valley Bridleway in Nailsea, part of National Cycle Network Route 33. The improvements will focus on the stretch between Station Road and Trendlewood Way.
The scheme would deliver a range of improvements, including:
- Widening around 300 metres of the existing bridleway to 3 metres wide
- Resurfacing the path with a new sealed surface to improve accessibility for all
- Installing lighting to improve safety and enable year-round use (and sensitively designed)
Cllr Hugh Malyan, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at North Somerset Council, said: “The Golden Valley Bridleway is an important everyday route for residents, whether they’re walking, wheeling, cycling or riding a horse.
These improvements will make it safer, more accessible and more enjoyable for people of all ages. We’re committed to creating high quality active travel routes across North Somerset, and this project is another positive step in that direction.”
Funded through the Active Travel Fund 5 (ATF5), the project forms part of the National Cycle Network Route 33 (NCN 33) and follows recent Festival Way Safety Improvements delivered through ATF4.
The council is also exploring additional safety measures, such as speed reduction at the Trendlewood Way crossing and possible changes to barriers at the path junction, in line with discussions with Nailsea Town Council as the landowner.
Further design considerations include protecting tree roots covered by Tree Preservation Orders, maintaining the natural character of the area.
As part of the council’s commitment to creating routes that feel safe and welcoming for everyone, national guidance on women’s safety, accessibility for children, and the needs of vulnerable users is shaping the design.
The Golden Valley Bridleway emerged as the top local priority from in person Nailsea engagement sessions last year as part of the Nailsea Active Travel Action Plan.
