Portway Park & Ride’s remodelled bus entrance to reopen on 12 September
Work to remodel the junction that buses use to access the Park & Ride on the A4 Portway is almost complete, and the number 9 bus will soon be able to stop at the site once more.
Following completion of the new entrance layout, from Friday 12 September, people using the Park & Ride service will be able to use the bus stop within the Park & Ride site once again.
The work, which started in February 2025, included:
• Widening and reconfiguring the bus junction
• Adding more wayfinding
• Installing a pedestrian crossing next to the bus junction
• Resurfacing the area
The new layout means that buses travelling to and from the northwest of the city and beyond will now be able to access the Park & Ride site, opening up opportunities to develop the number 9 service and improve connections for people commuting between Avonmouth and the city centre.
The previous layout of the junction only allowed access to buses travelling to and from the southeast towards the city centre.
I am really pleased that work is almost finished on time and on budget, and that Park & Ride users will be able to catch the bus on-site once more, which is much more convenient for them.

The remodel means that new bus connections will be able to serve the Park & Ride, such as the planned direct shuttle bus to and from the YTL Arena in Filton when it opens.
A section of the A4 Portway, between West Town Road and Barrow Hill Road, will be closed overnight in both directions (Thursday 4 September) from 8pm to 6am, to complete resurfacing work outside the new bus entrance. There are also some finishing touches to make to the bus entrance after it has opened, such as installing the new bespoke gates.
The £2 million Portway Park & Ride bus entrance project is being funded by the UK Government as part of the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement, secured by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority. This funding aims to decarbonise transport and encourage people to use public transport and to walk and cycle more. It cannot be used for ongoing maintenance of roads or on other council services, such as housing.
UPDATE:
Due to the weather forecast, the overnight road closure on Thursday 4 September has been cancelled. This means the A4 Portway will remain open.
Notes to Editor:
• While access along the Portway for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained throughout the overnight closure, diversions will be in place during the works, signposting all vehicles, including HGVs, through Shirehampton.
• Vehicles will still be able to enter Portway Park & Ride via West Town Road, with marshals on hand to guide vehicles wishing to exit.
• Bus services 37 and X14 will be diverted, however, the number 9 bus will still pick up and drop-off outside the Park & Ride.
