A quiet on-road route from Southmead Hospital to ‘The Arches’ on Zetland Road.
Bristol has been awarded additional funding from the UK government to upgrade walking and cycling routes across the city. £19m has been allocated for projects from 2015 to 2018 in the Bristol area.
One of these routes is the Southmead Quietway. We are working to make this route a quiet, safe and enjoyable route to get people to work or play all year round. Improving facilities for pedestrians and cyclists along the Southmead Quietway will help give communities in North Bristol a better, healthier alternative for transport.
We want to make walking and cycling routes in Bristol as safe and enjoyable as we can. Proposed improvements to Wellington Hill West include; upgrading the Zebra crossing to a parallel pedestrian and cyclist crossing and introducing a raised table to address vehicle speeds.
For many people, crossing busy roads feels unsafe. The proposed improvements provide a safer formal crossing for people walking and cycling of all ages and abilities on this important section of the Southmead Quietway.
Cairns Road
We want to make Walking and Cycling routes in Bristol as safe and enjoyable as we can. The proposals for Cairns Road feature a parallel pedestrian and cyclist crossing with a contraflow cycle lane on Cairns Road. The crossing forms an important part of the Southmead Quietway as it will provide a safer crossing point on this main road.
For many people, cycling across busy roads feels unsafe. Providing a cycle lane and a formal crossing point will help make the Southmead Quietway safe and enjoyable.
Kingsholm Road – Southmead Hospital Entrance
We want to make walking and cycling routes in Bristol as safe and enjoyable as we can. We want to make it easier and more convenient for people to walk and cycle locally. The Southmead Quietway connects Southmead Hospital to ‘The Arches’ on Gloucester Road via quiet, low traffic streets.
We have been working in partnership with Southmead Hospital to improve walking and cycling access to the Hospital via Kingsholm Road. The changes will make it easier for people walking and cycling to access the Hospital by removing obstructions such as parked cars and the dilapidated gates. These obstructions create a pinch point between people walking and cycling which can lead to conflict.
We’re also taking this opportunity to install four new trees to improve the street scene whilst preventing people from contravening the road closure.
