The West of England Combined Authority worked with Bristol City Council, Network Rail and Great Western Railway to deliver a new rail station a Portway Park & Ride in Shirehampton.
Construction of the new station got underway early in 2022 and completed in the summer of 2023. The station opened to the public on 1 August 2023. The station is served by the Severn Beach Line, following the enhancement of these services by the Combined Authority in December 2021.
Portway Park & Ride is the first new railway station delivered as part of the MetroWest programme, and the first new station to be launched in Bristol since Parson Street station was opened in 1927.
The Severn Beach Line runs between Bristol Temple Meads and Severn Beach, serving key destinations including Lawrence Hill, Stapleton Road, Clifton and Avonmouth.
The rail service complements the existing Park & Ride bus service and is a useful extra transport option for the local community, as well as providing Park & Ride users from further afield a rail option to destinations along the Severn Beach line or for onward travel on the wider rail network from Bristol Temple Meads.
The £5.866m project was jointly funded by the West of England Combined Authority, Bristol City Council and the Department for Transport, with additional funding contributions from Network Rail and Great Western Railway.
The Portway Park & Ride car park has been expanded to provide additional parking spaces for bus and train users. The site expansion project was undertaken between late 2022 and early 2023, funded by the Combined Authority.

Bristol City Council commissioned Network Rail to produce a GRIP 2 study to assess options for a new railway platform and associated station facilities at the Portway Park and Ride site.
The station would provide Park and Ride users with an alternative mode of transport to the existing bus service.
