Information on bus services supported by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.

What are supported bus services

The majority of bus services in the West of England are operated on a commercial basis by private bus companies.

As a Local Transport Authority, the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority (MCA) can fund local bus services which are deemed to be socially necessary. We refer to these as supported bus services.

These services complement the commercial network and provide bus services, or additional journeys on bus services, that would not otherwise exist. They include urban, inter-urban, and rural bus services, the Portway & Brislington Park & Ride services, and the Long Ashton to Southmead Hospital Park & Ride service.

The funding for the majority of these services come from the Transport Levy, the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), and other funding opportunities as and when they arrive.

The MCA also supports a number of WESTlocal services, and further details of these services can be found on the WESTlocal webpage.

School bus services

The Department for Education sets the national eligibility criteria for free travel to schools, and the council that acts as the local education authority is responsible for deciding which children meet those criteria.

In the MCA area, the councils that act as the local education authority are Bath & North East Somerset Council, Bristol City Council and South Gloucestershire Council. School transport enquiries should be directed to them in the first instance:

School children and post-16 age students can also use the local commercial bus network of which First Bristol, Bath & The West are the main operator:

  • Children under 5 years of age travel free on First services. Children between 5 and 16 years of age are entitled to a 50% discount on all tickets across the West of England and are advised to get a (free) First photo ID pass as proof of age.
  • Young people (16-21) and students (of any age if in full time education) can get up to 10% discount.
  • Further information is available on the First Bus website here: Children (0-15) | First Bus and here: Young Person (16-21) & Students | First Bus

For specific information about post-16 student travel provision, please contact the school or college concerned.
