Bristol Travel to Work Survey Results
The Bristol data includes all responses from people who work at participating organisation’s sites that are located in the Bristol City Council area.
- This will include people who both live and work in Bristol and those who commute into the area.
- In 2024, there were 6,092 responses (30% of total survey) for the Bristol UA area. In 2023, there were 6,803 responses (43% of total).
- This year, 55 organisations based in Bristol UA took part in the survey – 30 of these also took part in 2023, 15 were new to the survey and 10 came back after taking a break.
Headlines
1. People continue to drift back into the workplace. 65% of people say they are spending the majority of their working hours at a workplace while 32% are spending the majority of their working hours at home. In 2023, the figures were 63% and 34% respectively and in 2022 they were 50% and 48%.
2. Hybrid working is still popular. 95% of people go into work at least 1 day a week, this is the same as in 2023. 60% go into work 3 or more days a week, this is up from 59% in 2023.
2.1 Midweek is when the majority of people are going into the office. Tuesday is still the busiest day with 65% (up from 64% in 2023) and Friday is still the quietest with only 39% (down from 40% in 2023).
2.2 66% of people continue to work at home at least 1 day a week, this is up from 64% in 2023. 29% are working from home 3 or more days a week, this is down from 31% in 2023.
3. 37.1% of respondents are commuting by car. 31.3% are driving alone by car (up from 29.1% in 2023) and more people, 5.8%, are car sharing (up from 4.6% in 2023).
4. 32.3% of respondents are commuting by active travel. This figure is down from35.8% in2023. 16.1% of people are walking and 16.2% are cycling into work (the figures for 2023 were 18.2% and 17.6% respectively).
5. 24.5% of respondents are commuting by public transport. This is up 1% from 2023. However, fewer, 15.6%, are taking the bus (down from 16.4% in 2023) and more, 8.9%, are catching the train into work (this is up from 7.1% in 2023).
Bus includes public bus, metrobus, employer bus, park & ride and WESTlink.
6. 4.3% of respondents are working all the time from home. This is slightly higher than the 2023 figures (4.1%), lower than in 2022 (6%) but higher than the 2020 and 2019 surveys (both 0%).
7. Those commuting by train are travelling into work the least – on average, 2.3 days per week (same as in 2023). Those commuting by walking (on average 3.4 days) and car sharing (on average 3.5 days) are travelling into work the most. This is similar to 2023 when both these modes were, on average, 3.4 days per week.
8. People who walk, cycle or scoot to work have higher journey satisfaction than those who use public transport or road-based transport (car, motorbike). People are also more satisfied with their journey to work than from work across most travel modes. Satisfaction rates for working from home have increased from 90% in 2023 to 94% in 2024.
