Major Updates

The four West of England authorities have been successful in bidding for funding from the Department for Transport’s Access fund budget to enable Access WEST Year 4 between 2020-21. This is an extension of the Access WEST programme which ran between 2017-20.

South Gloucestershire Council’s business engagement manager is available to provide a wide range of support to all organisations in the area. As part of the Access WEST project, we will be able to offer a range of support packages including employer grants to promote sustainable travel measure, a cycle champions scheme (including Dr Bike, bike maintenance provision and led rides), general support to promote walking and cycling to work and we will be continuing our Wheels to Work West programme to help support people looking to access work and skills. We will continue to offer travel roadshow events run by the experienced Travelwest roadshow team.

Since the Access West Year 4 programme was developed, the global pandemic of COVID-19 has spread to the UK and as such the programme is being adapted in light of these new conditions particularly in relation to the practical delivery. Since the country has been in lock down, there has been considerable associated reductions in traffic and the programme will work to support the positive travel behaviour changes which has contributed to this reduction. The support services provided by each of the projects are also being adapted where possible during this challenging period. We will communicate when possible any amendments and changes to the programme as a result of the current situation.

As part of the work of the Access WEST project across the West of England, we support the promotion and operation of an annual commuter travel challenge. For 2020 the challenge will be amended with a new delivery partner and will take place in a different period of the year following COV-19 and we hope to share further details soon. We will once again be leading the annual Travel to Work Survey on behalf of the four West of England authorities which helps to identify travel patterns in the area to help guide work on promoting sustainable travel.
