Moving into a new home is the perfect opportunity to rethink how you travel. There are lots of travel options in your new neighbourhood for the everyday journeys that you need to make, and moving house is a great time to try them!
Could you take the bus to work now and then or share lifts on the school run?
Maybe walk or cycle to the local library, park, or leisure centre when it suits you. Even small changes to your travel habits can make a big difference. Travelling actively and sustainably – such as walking, cycling, scooting, catching the bus, or car sharing to name a few – have lots of benefits.

The Travel Planning Team is here to support you to explore and try new ways of getting around. Here is a list of the different ways we work with your new community to do this:
Travel Plan
Your new development has a Travel Plan designed to support active and sustainable travel. It includes measures to encourage:
- Active travel modes such as walking, wheeling, and cycling
- Public transport use
- Car sharing
The Travel Plan launched in January 2022 and is expected to run for five years. However, its duration may be extended depending on the progress of site construction. Any changes to the end date will be monitored and updated here as necessary.
South Gloucestershire Council’s Travel Plan Team coordinates the plan and ensures its successful implementation.
Travel Information Packs
Within a month of moving in, you’ll receive a welcome letter with Travel Plan details and the name of your Travel Plan Coordinator. You will also receive a Discover Yate guide and some useful travel leaflets.
Discover Guide
Discover Yate is your go-to resource for exploring the local area and getting to know your active and sustainable travel options for the journeys you need to make. It highlights:
Walking and cycling routes.
Information on public transport options, car-sharing schemes, bike parking and storage, and other travel-related infrastructure.
Local amenities and points of interest that help build a vibrant and connected community.
Green outdoor spaces.
The guide is shaped by local recommendations to help new residents feel at home and to try travelling actively for some of the journeys that need to be made.
As a new resident, you’ll receive a printed copy of the discover guide with your welcome letter, and a copy is also sent to you when it gets updated. You can also request a copy by emailing [email protected] or view the digital map online.
Travel Surveys
We conduct an annual travel survey to understand residents travel choices and behaviour so we can make sure we’re delivering the most effective support for your community. As a resident, you’ll receive a letter with a QR code and web link to complete the survey online. Paper copies are available on request.
Your feedback is important to us and helps shape future improvements. We’d love to hear from you.
The survey also lets you:

2025 third annual travel survey highlights

- Included some door-to-door engagement to boost participation and offer personalised travel planning
- Received 178 responses (9% response rate)

Compared to the previous year:
- Fewer car journeys are being made with only one person per vehicle
- More residents are choosing to share car trips for their journeys
- Cycling, walking, and bus use remained steady

Events
Every year we hold events like travel roadshows, local guided walks, and Dr Bike sessions on your new development. These activities are a key part of the Travel Plan and aim to:
- Encourage sustainable and active travel choices.
- Raise awareness of the Travel Plan and the range of travel options available.
- Provide personalised travel advice to help you explore your new area and discover transport options that suit your needs. Our trained travel officers can assist with journey planning and offer extra support to help you try new ways of getting around.
- Boost your confidence in cycling through services like Dr Bike sessions to make your bike roadworthy, bike marking with the police for added security, and cycle training.
- Help you get to know your neighbourhood through guided walks and local activities.

Guided Walk – May 2025
Led by conservationist and historian Steve England, this walk helped 41 residents to explore their surroundings, connect with the Travel Plan Coordinator and learn about sustainable and active travel options in the area, and foster a sense of community by meeting fellow neighbours.

Walking around North Yate New Neighbourhood is generally quite easy and pleasant, thanks to a growing network of accessible footpaths and walking routes.
For those keen to explore beyond the immediate area, Yate offers a variety of walking groups and scenic routes suitable for all ages and abilities.
Southwold (Yate) Ramblers
If you’re looking to enjoy the outdoors, meet friendly locals, and discover the beautiful countryside around Yate, consider joining this group. They are a friendly and active group offering regular walks in and around Yate, the Cotswolds, Wiltshire, and South Wales.Age UK South Gloucestershire – Walking Well Programme
The programme offers gentle, sociable walks for adults aged 50+. Walks are short (1 – 2 miles) and followed by a social drink.
Cycling

Cycle stands are located at local parks and outside the local centre, making it easy to secure your bike when visiting green spaces or the local store. Residents are also within easy reach of the wider cycling facilities available across Yate, which supports safe, sustainable, and enjoyable travel for leisure, commuting, and everyday errands. This includes shared-use paths, quiet routes, cycle stands, secure bike parking, and recently introduced bike hangars in nearby areas.
To help you get started, the Better By Bike website offers information on everything from free loan bikes and adult cycle training to trip planning tools, route maps, and local cycling groups.
South Gloucestershire Council also welcomes community input through its cycle forum and public consultations, working to make cycling safer and more accessible for everyone.

Yate offers secure bike storage options to make cycling more convenient. Bike hangars with 6 spaces are available at Yate Leisure Centre (pay-as-you-go), and with 4 spaces at Yate bus station (subscription only). You can book spaces via the ParkMyBike app, with prices starting at £1/hour or £5/day, and subscriptions from £8/month or £72/year.
For regular commuters, bike lockers are available at Yate train station and Yate Park & Ride. These cost £44.10 per year, with a £39.90 refundable key deposit.

The Yate Community Bike Hub is a volunteer-run, non-profit initiative aimed at promoting cycling in Yate, Chipping Sodbury, and surrounding areas. Located at 16 North Walk, Yate Shopping Centre, the hub refurbishes donated bikes and redistributes them to the community at low or no cost. It also offers affordable cycling accessories, maintenance workshops, and community events like family bike rides and security marking sessions. Current opening times are Monday to Wednesday 2 – 5pm, and Saturday 10am – 3pm.
Whether you’re new to cycling or looking to get more involved, the hub provides a welcoming space to learn, connect, and ride.

If your bike needs a tune-up, repair, or general maintenance, Yate offers several options to support cyclists:
Local repair services are available, including independent shops, mobile mechanics, and community-led initiatives. These can help with everything from punctures to full servicing. Ask at local hubs like the leisure centre or library for recommendations.
Dr Bike sessions offer free bike safety checks and minor repairs. Mechanics inspect brakes, gears, tyres, and more, often fixing small issues on the spot. These sessions are held regularly in community events and public spaces typically during warmer months.
Emergency Bike Repair Kits (EBRKs) are available at selected public locations across South Gloucestershire. These kits include essentials like tyre levers, patch kits, and pump, ideal for quick fixes while you’re out and about.

Yes, North Yate is well-connected by local bus services, making it easy to travel for work, shopping, or leisure. Key services include:
Service Y2 (First Bus)
Ladden Garden Village – Yate shopping centre – Yate P&R – Frampton Cotterell – Winterbourne – M32 – Bristol city centreBuses run every day, throughout the day and evening, roughly every 35 minutes during the main part of the day Monday – Saturday, and hourly in the evenings and on Sunday.
Service 525 (Stagecoach)
Yate – Ladden Garden Village – Yate shopping centre – south Yate – Westerleigh – Pucklechurch – Emersons Green (Sainsbury’s).Buses run an hourly service during the day, every day.

As Ladden Garden Village continues to grow, we’re aware of requests for improved bus access to its northernmost areas. The Public Transport team are exploring options for extending services to better serve residents in this part of the development.

This is an on-demand minibus service operating in the West of England outside Bristol and Bath city centres. It runs without a timetable or route and is booked ‘on-demand’ through the WESTlink app or by phone. It is well used in and around Yate.
North Yate New Neighbourhood is in the Yate rural WESTlink zone. This zone is bordered by the M5 and M4 motorways, and the Gloucestershire border. It includes Charfield and Tortworth to the north, Acton Turville to the east and Frampton Cotterell to the west. The area has been expanded slightly around Lyde Green to take in the Bristol & Bath Science Park and surrounding businesses, and Lyde Green Park & Ride site.
Via shared zones, you can also travel to the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol Parkway station, MOD & Filton Abbey Wood, Southmead Hospital, and Wotton-under-Edge.
WESTlink operates Monday to Saturday, 07:00 to 19:00. It is closed on Sundays & Public Holidays.

There are two approved bus service change dates in the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority. These typically happen in April and September. There may be timetable changes to improve punctuality and reliability, or frequency changes to reflect demand. Occasionally routes change. The nearest train station to the North Yate New Neighbourhood is Yate Railway Station, located approximately 2 miles southwest of the development at 6 Station Road BS37 4PS.
Trains run regularly, north to Gloucester and Cheltenham Spa from platform 1, and south towards Bristol Temple Meads from platform 2.
You can reach Yate Station in several ways:
- Walking: Around 35 – 45 minutes via local roads and footpaths.
- Cycling: Takes approximately 15 minutes. Bike parking is available at the station.
- Bus: The Y2 is a direct service from Ladden Garden Village, and bus services 86, Y1, Y6, and Y8 also stop outside the station.
- Driving: Limited pay parking is available at the station.
- Park & Ride: You can park free of charge at the Yate Park & Ride site and walk about 8 minutes to the rail station.

Yate Park & Ride is situated on the western edge of Yate on the A432 Badminton Road. It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
There is ample parking accommodating up to 198 cars. This includes 38 EV charging bays and 13 disabled parking spaces. Car parking is free to users taking onward journeys by bus or train.
There is a 40-space covered two-tier cycle storage facility, and 6 cycle lockers.
Regular buses call in, or just outside, the Park & Ride site.
Please note that there are no toilet facilities available at the Yate Park & Ride site.

- Bus Y2 from Ladden Garden Village, Monday – Saturday every 35 minutes, hourly on Sundays; journey time approximately 1 hour. Also pick up from Yate Shopping centre or Yate Park & Ride.
- Bus Y1 from Yate shopping centre or Yate Park & Ride.
- Train from Yate train station to Bristol Temple Meads station, hourly.

- Walk 40 – 50 minutes either via Goose Green Way, Station Road, and Bowling Hill. Or via Peg Hill and The Ridings dedicated walk and cycle path adjacent to Wickwar Road.
- By bike, a 10 – 15-minute journey taking either of the routes listed above.
- Take the Y2 bus to Yate shopping centre and pick up the Y8 bus to Chipping Sodbury High Street. Or take the 525 bus to Mallard Close stop and then walk 15 minutes.
- Directly by WESTlink.

Yate shopping centre – Rangeworthy – Tytherington – Thornbury – Alveston – Olveston – Tockington – Lower Almondsbury – Cribbs Causeway.
The nearest bus stop for the Y2C from Ladden Garden Village is called Halifax Road on Greenways Road, approximately a 25-minute walk from Sainsbury’s Local. Or pick the Y2C up from Yate shopping centre. approximate journey time to Cribbs Causeway is 75 minutes.
It runs every 80–90 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays. -

- Drive to the Lyde Green Park & Ride site and take the m3 metrobus to UWE.
- Once the A432 M4 overbridge reopens, bus services from Yate can connect with the m3 metrobus which calls at UWE.

- Walking – a 50-minute walk.
- Cycling – a 15-minute cycle ride with bike parking facilities on arrival.

Yate Shopmobility Service is a charity-run service designed to help those with limited mobility access the shops and facilities. Based in Yate Shopping Centre – 44 West Walk beside the library, it offers mobility scooter and wheelchair hire (manual and powered). Free daily hire for those who possess any English bus pass (a small membership fee is required), with low-cost hire for others.
